Introduction to Flash Facts Add Subtract
Flash Facts Add Subtract is a diagnostic, customized drill and practice
program for addition and subtraction facts. The parent or the child can
select the type of operation (Addition and/or Subtraction), the specific
facts, and the number of seconds the child has to answer each fact. When
the child finishes the program, a percentage grade is given and the facts
missed the most are shown. If desired, the child may print out an individual
diagnostic summary sheet. This sheet reports the percentage grade, number of
facts completed, number of correct answers, number of seconds given to answer
each fact, plus a breakdown of how many times each fact was missed. Grades
are saved and parent or child can go back and review the progress the child
is making.
Flash Facts Addition Subtraction is more than a mere drill program where
facts are given at random. Not only does the program allow the parent or
child to select which facts are drilled but it also has its own diagnostic
component. If a child gets the correct answer to a fact, they move
immediately on to the next fact. However, if the child misses the fact,
they are immediately shown the correct answer. The child is then presented
with the fact again. The child must correctly answer the fact before
continuing. The missed fact is recorded. The missed fact will be continued
to be presented with the other selected facts until the child answers it
correctly. After all the facts have been answered correctly, Flash Facts Add
Subtract drills the child once again over the facts that the child missed.
Page 3
Flash Facts Add Subtract helps the younger child (up to third grade)
first learn addition and subtraction skills by displaying squares on the
screen. For addition two lines of squares representing the two numbers to
be added are displayed on the screen. For subtraction one line of squares
are displayed on the screen but the number of squares subtracted are crossed
out. At first the child should be encouraged to point at and touch the
squares on the monitor. This concrete process helps the child understand the
concepts of addition and subtraction.
The timed component helps the older child (third grade and up) memorize
the facts and to eventually give up counting the squares on the computer
screen, or using the fingers, or other aids the child may use at first. At
first the parent might set the time limit to 10 or more seconds. But as the
child memorizes the facts, the time limit should be set to 5 or less seconds.
Addition and subtraction facts are visually displayed in large numerals
both horizontally and vertically. If you have Sound Blaster or a compatible,
Disney Sound Source, or the IBM Speech Adapter, when a child misses a fact,
the fact is also presented orally. This combination of oral and visual
presentation helps the child master their facts.
Flash Facts Add Subtract is one of three programs in a series. Flash
Facts Multiply Divide helps the child master the multiplication and division
facts. Flight of the Facts Bee is an animated game where the child is
presented a fact and then must fly a bee to the flower with the correct
answer. Please read ORDER.DOC for ordering information.

To Operate Flash Facts Add Subtract
PROGRAM NOTE: Facts are presented both vertically and horizontally.
The white line(s) on the side(s) represents the number of facts
remaining. The line decreases each time a fact is answered
correctly. The title -Drill- is at the top when students are drilled
over all the facts selected. The title - Drill Over Missed Facts -
is at the top when students are drilled over all the facts they
missed during the drill. If time expires and your answer is
incorrect, a clock face appears. If your answer is wrong, you will
be checked wrong. If you answer correctly, a Right On Target and
your percent correct appears.
1. Type in your name and then press the Enter key.
2. Type in your answer.
3. Press the Enter key or wait until time runs out.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until finished.

Sound Options.
To select or change Sound Adapter press CTRL + S and
then follow the directions on the screen.
For Sound Blaster and compatibles make sure the I/O
address, the Interrupt, and the DMA channel are correct.
Some compatibles use a different interrupt and a different
DMA channel when they are emulating Sound Blaster than they
use during normal operation. Check your sound board manual
for compatibility directions. If the program freezes, redo and
check all your settings.
For DigiSpeech you must first load the driver using
LWDIGI.EXE using the command LWDIGI /V. The /V
options adds the LPC voice. I suggest combining the
LWDIGI.EXE with FLASH1.EXE in a batch file. The
following commands will create a batch file called F1.BAT.
Type:
COPY CON F1.BAT (then press the Enter key)
LWDIGI /V (then press the Enter key)
FLASH1.EXE (then press the Enter key)
and then press CTRL-Z.
Then simply type F1 to start Flash Facts Addition Subtraction with
DigiSpeech. Flash Facts Add Subtract will work on networks that
have both IBM Speech Adapters and DigiSpeech speech adapters. When
using the sound selection option, select either the IBM Speech Adapter
or the DigiSpeech adapter. Flash Facts Add Subtract will automatically
detect which speech adapter is being used as long as the DigiSpeech work
stations have the driver loaded using LWDIGI.EXE /V.
